Scripture tells us to love our neighbor as ourselves.  At First Christian, we try to follow these words of wisdom through our support of a vast array of ministries, both local and international.  Through our efforts, we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, support education, advocate for justice, help support a special program of theological education in our own Southern Conference, as well as much, much more.

First Christian has been recognized as a "Five for Five" church, supporting all five national offerings within the United Church of Christ.

In addition, we are partnered with the Alamance County Association for the Blind, and have helped support the local Habitat for Humanity, and Allied Churches.

Worship is at the heart of our life together at First Christian.  We worship in an historic building in downtown Burlington.  Our sanctuary sparkles with the colors of stained glass windows, hand-crafted in Italy.  Though our worship is "traditional", it is lively.  Throughout the course of the year, our worship life is accented by special services.  These range from a Christmas Cantata, to a Hanging of the Green service during Advent, to Easter services that include the Sedar on Maunday Thursday, an Easter Sunrise Service and breakfast to celebrate Christ's Resurrection, and a dramatic reading of the Passion Story on Easter Sunday.

Our worship begins at 10:30 A.M. on Sunday mornings followed by a time of fellowship immediately after, at 11:30 A.M.

Our music ministry, lead by Matt Rice, is anchored by our Chancel Choir of faithful church members, and supplemented with voices of several students at Elon University.

Our Rodgers Pipe Organ, installed in March, 1993, is our primary instrument for worship.  The organ is a combination of pipes and digital electronics voiced to the acoustics of the sanctuary. While the main organ is above the choir loft, an additional antiphonal division is located above the elevator, providing a unique spread of sound for organ literature/choral accompaniment and support for congregational singing.  With its many facets of sound, the organ continues its role in the tradition of outstanding sacred music at First Christian UCC.

Throughout the course of the year, our worship is supplemented by various guest musicians and musical groups.  One Sunday in particular, our service was led by the "Celebration Singers," a musical group of mentally disabled young adults who have a special musical gift, and who brought joy to our worship of God.

Our hymnal is the New Century Hymnal published by the United Church of Christ.

Christian Education

First Christian is gifted with strong, dedicated teachers in our Christian Education ministry.  Except for one month during the summer, our classes meet at 9:30 A.M., prior to worship.  In addition, the Board of Christian Education provides nursery care during our time of worship.

Late spring or early summer, the Board of Christian Education also sponsors a special Bible School for adults several evenings one week.  This program has been well supported and attended by community members beyond our own congregation.

In addition to Christian Education, the Board also supports several opportunities for fellowship throughout the course of the year.  Family Game Night, and an Ice Cream Social are but two such events.  The Board of Christian Education is the moving force behind the church's support of the Christmas Cheer Program, a ministry that provides Christmas gifts to local families that otherwise would go without.

Finally, the board also supports a Confirmation Program in order to help prepare youth for church membership.
